Drink of the Month - Spiced Hot drinks
Well since winter is here quite visbaly here are a few drinks to warm you up.
- 2 cups rose wine
- 2 cups cranberry-apple drink
- 2 cups orange-pineapple juice
- 2 to 3 tablespoons brown sugar, if desired
- 6 whole cloves
- 3 cinnamon sticks
In a large suacepan, combine all ingredients. Simmer over low heat,
stirring until sugar dissolves. Simmer for an additional 15 minutes.
Remove cloves and cinnamon sitcks. Serve warm in mugs, or cups.
12 (1/2 cup) servings.
- 2 cups pineapple juice
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- Peel of 2 oranges, cut into 1/4 inch strips
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 6 whole cloves
- 1 four-inch cinnamon stick
- 3 whole allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine
Heat pineapple juice, water, brown sugar, orange peel, orange juice,
cloves, cinnamon stick, allspice and salt to boiling in 4-quart Dutch
oven, stirring occasionally; reduce heat. Simmer uncovered 15 min.
Remove spices and orange peel; stir in wine. Heat just until hot (do
not boil). Serve in mugs or heatproof glasses garnished with orange
slice and cinnamon stick if desired.
NOTE: Hot spiced wine can be covered and refrigerated no longer than
1 week. Just before serving, heat just until hot (do not boil).
Mulled Claret:
Into a metal mug put:
- 1 lump sugar
- juice of 1/2 lemon
- 1 dash bitters
- 1 tsp. mixed cinnamon and nutmeg
- 5 oz Claret
Heat poker red hot and hold in liquid until boiling and serve;
or warm on a stove.
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 lemon, sliced
- 1 stick cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon cloves
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 bottle claret
- 2 cups pineapple juice
- 1 cup orange juice
Boil water with lemon slices, cinnamon, cloves, and sugar for 5 min.
Strain and mix with wine and fruit juices. Serve hot. Serves 8.
None of these recipies are particularly period I admit but they do help beat the cold.
Next month I will do either Glogg (a sweedish drink which starts a fire inside you) or
some mulled /spiced ciders. Depending on what people ask for.
